Television, video games, and computers are easily accessible to twenty-first-century children, but what impact do they have on creativity and imagination? In this book, two wise and long-admired observers of children's make-believe look at the cognitive and moral potential--and concern--created by electronic media. |

Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics
In this field of research, the term, “machine”, refers not only to computers, but also to diverse control devices in complex dynamic situations, such as industrial processes or transportation networks. Human activities are mainly oriented toward decisionmaking, including monitoring and fault detection, fault anticipation, diagnosis and prognosis, and fault prevention and recovery. The objectives of this decision-making are related to human-machine system performance (production quantity and quality) as well as to overall system safety. |

Antennas for Ubiquitous Radio Services in a Wireless Information Society
Wireless applications are now an integral part of everyday life. On the one hand, these applications are being praised for making lives better by facilitating efficient communication and effectively treating disease. On the other hand, they are criticised for invading privacy and representing a potential health hazard. In any case, we are aware of them everywhere in sound, image and data carrying systems, but they are also intrinsic to weather and traffic monitoring systems and in defence and security technology. In recognition of the need for continuous and sustained effort in the field of antenna engineering, the WiSE project (Wide Band Sparse Element Array Antennas) was initiated in 2004 to assemble a catalogue of wide-band radiators and explore the functional possibilities of a shared aperture concept. This book is a collection of papers which offers a retrospective of the WiSE projects main achievements, whilst also assessing their relevance within a wider antenna engineering perspective. There is a constant demand from wireless systems to provide increased performance; higher channel transmission capacity for multimedia and the pattern shaping and beam agility required for high-end radar and space-borne telecommunications. Addressing innovative concepts and state-of-the-art aspects in array antenna design, manufacturing and measurement, this volume provides an overview of the increasingly complex functionalities demanded by evolving radio services. Analog and Digital Signals and Systems
This book presents a systematic, comprehensive treatment of analog, discrete signal analysis and synthesis and an introduction to analog communication theory. The material is divided into five parts. The first part (Chapters 1-3) is mathematically oriented and deals with continuous-time (analog) signals. The second part (Chapters 4-5) is again mathematically based and deals with Fourier transforms, Hartley transforms, Laplace and Hilbert transforms. The third part (Chapters 6-7) presents basic system analysis, approximations, and analog filter circuits using op-amps. The fourth part (Chapters 8-9) deals with discrete signals, fast algorithms and digital filters. The fifth part deals with an introduction to analog communication systems. |

Advances in Machine Learning II {Repost}
This is the second volume of a large two-volume editorial project we wish to dedicate to the memory of the late Professor Ryszard S. Michalski who passed away in 2007. He was one of the fathers of machine learning, an exciting and relevant, both from the practical and theoretical points of view, area in modern computer science and information technology. His research career started in the mid-1960s in Poland, in the Institute of Automation, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. He left for the USA in 1970, and since then had worked there at various universities, notably, at the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign and finally, until his untimely death, at George Mason University. We, the editors, had been lucky to be able to meet and collaborate with Ryszard for years, indeed some of us knew him when he was still in Poland. After he started working in the USA, he was a frequent visitor to Poland, taking part at many conferences until his death. |

Radar Techniques Using Array Antennas (Repost)
This book gives an introduction to the possibilities of radar technology based on active array antennas, giving examples of modern practical systems, many of which were developed in Europe. In addition to coverage of antennas, array signal processing, adaptive digital beamforming, adaptive monopulse, superresolution, and sequential detection, several modern systems are described including space-time adaptive processing (STAP), moving target detection using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and several other experimental phased array radar systems. There are many valuable lessons presented for designers of future high standard multifunction radar systems for military and civil applications. The book will appeal to graduate level engineers, researchers, and managers in the field of radar, aviation and space technology. |

The Complete Guide to Home Wiring
One of the most daunting endeavors for any would-be do-it-yourselfer is dealing with the electrical--namely, electrical repairs, improvements, and wiring and rewiring projects. The reason for this is simple: mistakes can cause fires, major disasters and expense, and even death. But anyone can learn about safe and correct wiring in order to complete repairs or add new wiring to an aging and inadequate system. This is the book to show you how, from the basics of how electricity works and simple repairs and projects, all the way to complicated rewiring you might otherwise assume must be done by a professional. Included are the most up-to-date electrical code requirements; guides to evaluating, planning, and installing new electrical circuits; repair advice on switches, receptacles, and fixtures; and a detailed and well-illustrated lighting design section. A total of 288 pages of hundreds of illustrations and photographs and a comprehensive reference index make this an ideal book for the beginner, and an up-to-date refresher course for the professional. |

Networks on Chips: Technology and Tools (Repost)
The design of a complex SoC requires the mastering of two major tasks: The design of the computational elements and of their interconnect. The exponentially increasing complexity and heterogeneity of future SoCs forces the designer to abandon traditional bus -based structures and to implement innovative networks-on-chip. This book, written by two leading researchers, is the first of its kind. It is a must on the bookshelf of anybody having an interest in SoC design. |
